Introduction to the Luger pistol

There was a time when most of the action movies had World War II as background. Generally, to put the audience into condition, all was begining with the massive superiority of the "evil", smashing everything on its way. But, comfortably seated in one's armchair, each one was waiting patiently for the arrival of the U.S. cavalry, and the early signs of the final punishment. However, at the tougher of the melee, the buttocks clenched, no one could doubt that the aggressive German "Tiger" tank would make short work of the podgy "Patton". And when the slender "Panzer Division" officer was emerging from its burning turret, the face sinister and the Luger pistol in hand, ... it seemed that nothing was not yet settled ...

Today, if the Luger pistol is "retired" from movies and comic books, its ghost probably remained in the thought of those, fast decreasing, who had to fear it really. It is obvious however that its particular shape and its way of functionning give it, despite of its mortal purpose, the prestige of handsome and mysterious objects. As many other old firearms it progressively get rid of its embarrassing past to join the large circle of collector items which price does not stop soaring.

The Luger pistol story coincides with the rise and development of the semi-automatic pistol. Its inventor, Georg Luger, was one of these talentuous men that succeeded in putting ideas and theoretical principles into practice. No other handgun has probably been so analysed and indexed. That is to say its knowledge deserves the detour.
