The Government Models: The Development of the Colt Model of 1911
The most authoritative source on the development of the world's most popular military pistol. Includes an illustrated description and analysis of all the variations, including rare factory models. A beautiful color section shows a wide selection of the most exciting Colt M1911s ever made. One hundred and ten pages of complete factory shipping records allow individual pistols to be researched by serial number! These records include all martial and thousands of commercial big frame Colt autos through the last Transition Government Model of 1924. Carefully designed for quick reference and distinctive appearance, Goddards "The Government Models" is a must for every enthusiast of Colts and military firearms.

Us Handguns of World War II : The Secondary Pistols and Revolvers Meticulous, technical and overwhelming in its detail, this extensive volume provides the complete history of US secondary handgun weapons used in World War II. However, the popular and widely used government-issue Colt .45 caliber automatic pistol is not included, as so much has already been written about that venerable weapon. Instead, Pate focuses on all the other US pistols and revolvers, both commercial and military, used during the war. Pate is a retired US Army officer and a respected authority on military weapons. Because of his book's scope, focus and depth, his target audience is firearms collectors and World War II historians. The general reader will quickly tire of ballistic and manufacturing jargon, and the dry, numbing details of weapon development, procurement, and distribution. This is a quality product, but with limited appeal. For the handgun enthusiast, however, this is a treasure trove of minutiae regarding American handguns. Colt and Smith & Wesson models dominate the handgun arsenal, but Pate has also included weapons made by Harrington and Richardson, Iver Johnson and High Standard. Automatics and revolvers, .22 caliber to .380 caliber, are showcased with data and photographs. Pate even includes a cute little "hold-up gun," issued to OSS spies. It fired from under the armpit when the spy raised his arms in surrender.

Les pistolets Colt - 100 ans de production
This book, published in 1998 is the second work relating to firearms written by the Belgian author Gérard HENROTIN.  As in his first title issued in 1996 : "La Connaissance du Luger", this book includes a great variety of technical pictures, drawn from the infographic technology. This ultra-modern process, used for the first time at this level in the firearms literature, allows to reach one of the most difficult goal : the close understanding of the firearms mechanical. All the illustrations of this site are stemming from the same technical and are parts of the book (a very small part in fact). Our long chapter relating to the Colt pistols will enlighten what kind of data you are supposed to find in this beautifully illustrated book. Not only you will learn how these handguns function, but you will get their complete historical background and various markings explanations. A one of its kind book, that leaves the reader with a feeling of great satisfaction.

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Handguns : Pistols and Revolvers of the World, 1870 to the Present
The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Handguns is a fantastic reference for the avid gun and militaria collector. It is a vast compendium of sketches and illustrations of thousands of handguns from around the world and accross time. It is organized by country of manufacture and includes a brief treatise on the companies referenced. The great value of this book lies in its use as tool to determine the origin of obscure, cryptically marked handguns and rare variations of better known models. The weakness of the book lies in its organization. This tome could benefit from a good cross-referenced index. Nonetheless, it is a work that all serious collectors of this genre should own.

Complete Guide to Service Handguns
Gangarosa's book is a good source of information for those who seek reference material on standard-issue service hanguns (Glocks, Sigs and etc.) as well as more exotic, yet highly functional handguns (Astra, FEG and etc.). Complete with very good pictures, the book provides fairly detailed explanations of a very wide variety of handguns. This is definitely a must for those who are interested in handguns other than (or in addition to) the garden-variety found in local sports stores.

Brassey's Essential Guide to Military Small Arms
As a broad treatise on small arms design this volume generally succeeds. It does not include every possible design, but has good coverage of the important ones. Since the main contributors are Czech it's particularly strong on East bloc designs including a few obscure ones, which is an interesting contrast with most Western writings. This book may have origins in a collection of articles but has been well-edited to create a relatively coherent whole. The writing and grammar are generally clear. There are a few places where the language (translations?) is a bit garbled, but the meaning is usually discernable. Arms design generally moves so slowly (compared, say to computers) that I'd say the content is reasonably current. For example, the coverage of modern Gatling designs is probably fresh enough to provide insight into current models. My overall impression is that the scope and background are reasonably broad and technical information is strong. There are lots of detailed formulas describing the physics involved. Given all this and the general difficulty in obtaining good information on small arms design, I recommend this title highly.

Gunsmithing : Pistols & Revolvers Top gunsmith Patrick Sweeney provides hands-on pistolsmithing projects for the beginning hobbyist as well as the serious enthusiast. Readers will learn how to clean, polish, and make minor repairs on their pistols. Later chapters cover installing new grips, adjusting trigger pull, fitting target bushings, and other projects. Includes a troubleshooting guide, a glossary of terms, and a directory of suppliers. 850 photos.
